Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Patna

 

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna was established in 2008 by a law of Parliament on August 06, 2008, as a result of Central Government's initiative of opening 8 new IITs and upgrading Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to the status of IIT. The Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 2011 for the same was passed by Lok Sabha on 24th March, 2011 and by Rajya Sabha on 30th April, 2012. With the assent of President on 20th June, 2012 , the law became an act.

IIT Patna started working from a temporary place in Patliputra Colony, the erstwhile location of Navin Government Polytechnic College.  The 10 acres campus has been upgraded and hostels has been renovated and few constructed to enable the proper functioning of the college till permanent campus is ready. The permanent campus of IIT Patna is under construction at Bihta, an Indian Air Force Station, some 35 km from Patna. Union HRD Minister, Kapil Sibbal had laid the foundation-stone of the 500 acres campus at Bihta.

IIT Patna currently runs 7 departments divided into three school :

  • School of Engineering : Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering
  • School of Sciences : Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences : Humanities and Social Science

For B. Tech. course, IIT Patna offers degree in three specialization -  Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. For PhD program, all the 7 courses are available. There are close to 400 student pursuing study in B.Tech. and PhD program and near 100 faculty members and support staffs. The campus is divided into Academic Block, Science Block, Mechanical Engineering Block, Electrical Engineering Block and STPI. All the departments are full equipped with the latest instruments. The Campus library is also well equipped with sufficient books and online facilities.

IIT Patna has 4 boys hostel and 1 girls hostel, sufficient to accommodate 500 student. The hostel are situated near to campus only and are enabled with LAN & Wi-Fi facilites. The hostels are equipped with gymnasium and table tennis facilities, beside having a basketball court, a volleyball court, a badminton court and a football-cum-cricket ground (under progress) for Boys Hostel campus.

IIT Patna has several collaborations from International institutes all over the world. The college has got many publications in the National and International journals.The student has been active in co-curricular activities also. Despite having only a couple of years of opening, IIT Patna is moving fast on the path of academic achievements.

The institution has recorded 97% placement in 2012 and 2013 with average annual package ranging from Rs. 7.25 lakh (and highest of Rs. 16.25 lakh) in 2012 to Rs. 8.17 lakh (highest Rs. 16.50 lakh) in 2013. The Honorable President Pranav Mukherjee was the chief guest at the convocation ceremony in 2013.

The present IIT Patna is one of the proposed metro station in Corridor 1-B of Phase 1 (Digha Link Metro Corridor).

New Campus (Bihta)

The new campus of IIT Patna is coming up at Bihta, some 20 km from Patna. The 500 acres campus will consist of classrooms, hostels, academic blocks, research lab, marketing place and several playgrounds. It will also have a Centre of Excellence which will promote R & D in the campus. Earlier the campus was scheduled to be function from 2014 academic year, however it could not start. It is expected that in 2015 the new campus will become fully functional.

How to reach :

IIT Patna is situated in Kurji area of Pataliputra Colony. The Chauraha outside IIT is called Polytechnic More and shared autos freqently ply from Patna Junction to it ( Patna Junction - Bailey Road - Boring Road - Pataliputra Colony - Polytechnic More ). There is other way also via Gandhi Maidan- Rajapul - Mainpura - Kurji - Polytechnic More, which is less favorable.
