It was in the year 2004, that the HRD Ministry upgraded the Bihar College of Engineering to the status of National Institute of Technology, thus making it as an institute of National Importance and providing autonomy in its sphere. It is the sixth oldest Engineering college in India whose root can be traced back to 1886 AD with the establishment of a Survey training school and subsequent up gradation to Bihar College of Engineering in 1900 AD. It is the 18th National Institute of Technology in the Country. It has also been declared as a Center of Excellence of imparting high level education training, research and development in Science, engineering technologies and humanities. With the partition of Jharkhand, the only Regional Engineering College at Jamsedpur went to Jharkhand. In its vision to create one NIT per state, Central Government upgraded the Bihar College of Engineering to NIT in 2004.
NIT Patna is situated in 60 acres of land off the Ashok Rajpath, behind the Gandhi Ghat, facing the river Ganges. The vast scenic view of the river Ganges provides an excellent back view to the NIT campus. The institute provide degree in 11 streams which are as follow :

NIT Patna offers course in B. Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degree in various streams. The Science department offer supporting courses to B. Tech. and M. Tech. student. All the departments have their own well equipped and organized laboratories. Every department has their own fully operational computer labs for student to get hands-on experience with the use of the software in the respective fields of concern. The institute library has a huge collection of books , numbering more than 50000 and 100 internationally acclaimed e-journals.
The institute has 2 boys hostel and one girls hostel nearby only. However, the seats offered are not sufficient to accommodate all the student. The student of NIT are quite involved in the extra co-curricular activities. The placement of the final years student is also satisfactory with many student getting good packages in renowned companies. With its establishment in 2004, the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering has been flying high under the autonomous umbrella of National Institute of Technology.
How to reach :
The college is situated some 200 m inside the NIT More off Ashok Rajpath, ahead to Patna Science College. One can reach there using the shared autos from South East Gandhi Maidan (Kargil Chowk). Gandhi Maidan is easily accessible from any part of the City.
