Rabindra Bhawan, Patna

 

Rabindra Bhawan is an important theater in Patna where various cultural and theatricals activities takes place at regular interval.  It was established with a view to propagate the ideas, literature, songs and other creations of Guru Rabindranath Tagore to the common man particularly the new generation.

It was felt by a few elites of Patna in 1947 to establish a cultural institution to propagate the thought, philosophy and ideas of Gurudev Tagore. It led to the establishment of Rabindra Parishad with the idea of imparting music specially Rabindra Sangeet and Manipuri Dance. In the year 1957, on the request of Smt. Roma Chakroborty, niece of Gurudev Tagore, the musical wing of Rabindra Parishad was named as Geeta Bhawan.  The construction of Ravindra Bhawan started in 1955 and it took several years to finish a part of it due to lack of fund. The State government provided more land in 1958. The Central government and Bihar government gave grant for building of Geeta Bhawan in 1981. The foundation stone of building was laid by the then CM of Bihar, Dr. Jagannath Mishra. By 1989, the ground floor of the proposed three storied building was ready. The inauguration ceremony was conducted by the the then governor of Bihar, Sri Jagannath Pahadia on 16th May, 1989. In 2009, State government gave special fund whereby 80% of the existing building was demolished to pave way for the new auditorium.

The state-of-art auditorium was inaugurated by CM Nitish Kumar in 2011. The capacity of the auditorium is 1000. It is fully air-conditioned and the stage has been widened.

Ravindra Parishad has completed 65 years of its establishment and keeping with the tradition, has been organizing cultural activities to popularize Rabindra Sangeet. Besides the Rabindra Bhawan hosts a number of cultural activities of different organisation, including schools and college at regular interval.
