After much anticipation and wait, finally the classes for the MBBS courses started at the newly established AIIMS Patna. It is to be noted that the Central government had given approval for the six AIIMS institute in different cities of the Country under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), including one at Patna.
The first MBBS batch of 50 student start attending class from Monday, 24th September 2012, after the institute was formally inaugurated by Bihar's Health Minister, Ashwani Kumar Chaubey. In the first batch, there are 37 boys and 13 girls, selected from the All India Pre-Medical Test taken by AIIMS this year. The sprawling campus has came up at Phulwarisharif. The State government has sought from the Center to change the institute name to Jai Prakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (JPNAIIMS), to which the latter has assured of bringing a notification in this regard. However, the hospital will start functioning from 2013 as the operational things need some time to establish.
