The 14-day long Saras Mela got a start on 29th November at the historic Gandhi Maidan. It will conclude on 12th December. The fair showcases the handicraft items and other items made by the self help groups and self employed persons (Swarozgaris) from a number of states. A total of 300 stalls including 20 of food-items are spread throughout the fair. Artisans from 18 states have came here to put up there stalls. A number of household items, including the carpets, showpieces, flower pots etc. are being sold in the fair. Cultural shows and other events are also being organized on a regular basis. The fair is open from 10 AM in the morning to 9 PM in the night. It is being organized by the Department of Rural Development, Government of Bihar in association of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The fair is organized to give exposure to rural artisans and entrepreneurs at the national level. It provides a direct platform for the sales of rural products and opportunity to link itself with the emerging trends of the market. In 2013-14, a total of 22 saras fairs are scheduled in various parts of the country.
