Astonishing comeback of Nitish Kumar led Mahagatbandhan

As the results of the 16th Bihar Vidhan Sabha election started coming, the political pundits were surprised to see the massive lead by the incumbent Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar led Mahagatbandhan. By the time when the final result came, the Mahagatbandhan had already won 178 seats in the house of 243 seats. The NDA coalition could only get 58 seats, much to the bewilderment of their supporters. The election result has not only affected the politics of Bihar, but would have far reaching repercussion in forthcoming elections.

The five-phase election that extended roughly for a month was intensely fought by the Mahagatbandhan and the NDA. The various Exit Polls Survey had predicted a balanced result, but the actual outcome was one sided. With this victory, Mr. Nitish Kumar will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the third time in the coming days, probably on November 20th. Mr. Lalu Prasad led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) emerged as the single largest party by winning 80 seats. Nitish Kumar led Janta Dal (United) won 71 seats, while Bhartiya Janata Party(BJP) won only 53 seats. The seats won by various parties are as follow :

Mahagatbandhan (Grand Alliance)

  • Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) : 80 seats
  • Janata Dal (United) : 71 seats
  • Indian National Congress (INC) : 27 seats

National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

  • Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) : 53 seats
  • Lok Jansakti Party (LJP) : 02 seats
  • Rashtriya Lok Samta Party : 02 seats
  • Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) : 01

Communist Party of India (M-L) : 03 seats
Independents : 04 seats

In terms of vote percentage, the figure of major parties stand as below :

  • BJP : 24.4%
  • RJD : 18.4%
  • JD(U) : 16.8%
  • IND : 9.4%
  • INC : 6.7%
  • LJP : 4.8%

With a clear majority in the House, the government is expected to be stable in the coming years. Bihar has shown remarkable growth in the recent years, however it is still near the botton on many indices on Pan-India parameters. The new government work would be to further enhance the rate of growth. In this scenario, tourism can play a major role. The new government should explore this yet untapped field in Bihar. It has the potential of not fast tracking the rate of growth but also checking the mass migration of people out of Bihar for employment across the country. wishes all the best for the new government and hopes for bright future of Bihar ahead.
