Patna Book Fair is a much awaited event in the city. It is generally held once in a year, but sometime it is held twice in a year (like in 2013, when it was held in March as well as November). The fair has generally been held at the historic Gandhi Maidan in the centre of the city barring few occasions, where it is held at other venues like Patliputra ground. The fair is being organized since 1985 under the banner of Centre for Readership Development (CRD). Till now, 20 editions of the fair has been organized, latest being organized in November 2013. The fair is generally held for two weeks.
The fair is generally held during November-December when the climate is cool. It attracts visitors in large number. People from all section of the society visits the fair. In November 2013 book fair, approximately 7 Lakh people visited it, which reflects its popularity among the citizen. It attract student in large number. Their entry-fee is generally waived-off on production of the Identity-Card. The entry ticket price for other people is nominal (Rs 5 in 2013). The fair attracts a large number of publishers who put up their stalls at the fair. The venue also consists of stall of foods and others in good numbers. Approximately, 750 stalls are put up in an area of 2 Lakh square feet. The size of the fair has kept on increasing with every edition. A number of cultural and other events keeps on happening throughout the fair duration. A number of new books are launched. Seminars on various issues are also held. Overall, the environment of the fair is quite good. The organizing committee is trying to get it international tag for a long time, however infrastructure bottleneck acts as hindrance. However, the committee is determined to get the status in 2014 fair.
